Knight of Cups

8. Holding Together [Union]
60. Limitation
These first few lines are the general aphoristic returns for the week. They are raw and uninterpreted; there to use how you’d like. (The specific readings follow.)
S.P. asks: Should I stay and work on this big thing or should I leave and do my own projects?
“S.P.” the returns on your question are quite clear. First and foremost be SINCERE, do not allow for ANY fantasy when considering your career path. After breathing that in, take a moment to understand where you are career-wise as regards being a leader and being a subordinate. ALL of us are leaders in certain areas and followers in others (there are no exceptions) are you ready to lead yourself more? And remember you can’t have it all; it is not possible to make a bold move that is simultaneously secure. And lastly, though it may sound trite, it is nevertheless true: TIMING IS EVERYTHING — “good timing” is the result of luck, intuition and intellect (you should always be working on the latter two).
This week we pulled the Knight of Cups. Knights in tarot are representative of energy and action (not deliberation). The suite of cups is connected to all things emotional (not intellectual). In combination we have something like a romantic warrior. The appearance of this card should spark one to consider energetic idealism — and how it may be positively or negatively impacting your situation. If you have a visionary but confident plan for a certain scenario, go for it — however if you feel like your emotions are too impractical, regroup (as has been said passion + time on the wrong path will just lead you farther in the wrong direction).
Our first hexagram this week is #8, Holding Together (Union). For there to be unity there must be a common purpose. For naysayers (those who might be inclined to say: how could one ever define a common good or purpose? Experience is too varied!!) please consider something like traffic rules. Traffic rules apply to doctors, children, teachers, pet store owners, instagram trolls, pog collectors, septuagenarians, octogenarians, all the varied influencers, etc., etc. — basically everyone. The common purpose of traffic rules is to keep the most amount of people safe as possible — the common good (for those deep, knee-jerk skeptics, yes, insurance companies, government contractors or the like may have some nefarious influence on traffic laws — but not nearly in any sort of majority way). Anyhow, and as well, “water flows to unite with water, because all parts of it are subject to the same laws. So too should human society hold together through a community of interests that allows each individual to feel themself a member of a whole.” There were two changes this week, of which the specific notes are: “Fundamental sincerity is the only proper basis for forming relationships” and maintain a clear and dignified understanding of the areas where you must lead and the areas where you are a follower/dependent.
Our second hexagram, the one that suggests how best to meet the challenges (or the changes) is #60, Limitation. Here, a stunning explanation of the beauty of limitation — and some adjacent qualifications. “Unlimited possibilities are not suited to humans; if they existed, their life would only dissolve into the boundless. To become strong, a person’s life needs the limitations ordained by duty and voluntarily accepted. The individual attains significance as a free spirit only by surrounding themself with these limitations and by determining for themself what their duty is… But in limitation we must observe due measure. If a person should seek to impose galling limitations upon their own nature, it would be injurious. And if they should go too far in imposing limitations on others, those others would rebel. Therefore it is necessary to set limits even upon limitation.”
- As regards emotional (non intellectual matters): if you are possessed by a confident, visionary feeling, go for it — however if it feels like a goal is impractical or fantastical, stop right away (as has been said elsewhere, passion + time on the wrong path will just lead you farther in the wrong direction).
- “Fundamental sincerity is the only proper basis for forming relationships.”
- Maintain a clear and dignified understanding of the areas where you are fit to lead and the areas where it is appropriate for you to follow or be a dependent.
- “To become strong, a person’s life needs the limitations ordained by duty and voluntarily accepted. The individual attains significance as a free spirit only by surrounding themself with these limitations and by determining for themself what their duty is.”
