To have a stable life, practice and/or relationship it is necessary to have steady stretches of time dedicated to strengthening those undertakings. Some of us, call us sensual rationalists, desire both this aforementioned soundness as well as moments of unrestrained ecstasy. This latter state is costly time-wise and often at odds with the former. What to do?! Do not overthink — if steadiness is wanted in both sober productivity and uninhibited expression, you will simply have to plan for both. And remember we cognize by differentiation; the state of being rhythmically grounded is defined by the wilds of immoderation — therefore rationality is not to be given more respect than exhilarated enchantment. Perhaps if you are really persistent and respectful of both directions, you could end up like a William Blake and have your rapture and your rationality coalesce into a single exultant scenario.

This week we pulled the Page of Cups. Here, an intimation to respect the unexpected. Inspiration and emotion keep one’s attention. Why? Don’t wonder at it, enjoy and be carried along by a deep feeling of strange creativity.

Our first hexagram this week is #57, The Gentle (The Penetrating, Wind). “Penetration produces gradual and inconspicuous effects. It should be effected not by an act of violation but by influence that never lapses. Results of this kind are less striking to the eye than those won by surprise attack, but they are more enduring and more complete. If one would produce such effects, one must have a clearly defined goal, for only when the penetrating influence works always in the same direction can the object be attained.” To be effective one’s conduct should not be glamorous or scheming; it must be genuine and persistent, that is, continually strive to be true. There were three changes this week, so expect some turbulence or unevenness. The specific notes are: engage military decisiveness, don’t continually overthink things — just think a bit then act, and finally rely on your experience — don’t try to reason it out.

Our second hexagram, the one that suggests how best to meet the challenges (or the changes) is #10, Treading (Conduct). Behave without illusion or hubris, so, lead when it makes sense to lead; follow when it makes sense to follow. “In terms of a human situation, one is handling wild, intractable people. In such a case one’s purpose will be achieved if one behaves with decorum. Pleasant manners succeed even with irritable people.”
