Petite Reading
This time of year puts an inordinate amount of pressure on socializing. It seems, the best way to get through is to be diplomatic, like take the excessive out-of-body-level interactions in stride (charmingly dance around impending dramas). But there is of course always a danger, if one is not careful, in actually becoming a diplomat. What can we do about not letting overdetermined situations define us? Well, knowledge is power as they say, so be practical and honest about what you are getting into. Take precaution by sincerely managing your own and others’ expectations. And know that you don’t help a situation by thinking you are superior to it — enter social situations strong and humble and leave strong and humble.

This week we pulled the King of Wands, reversed. In the upright position the card indicates a passionate desire to manifest — reversed, the fervor becomes unrealistic. Foster a passion for practicality this period.
Our first hexagram this week is #63, After Completion. When a vessel is full to the brim it is a blessing — but it is also likely to spill. So if there is a fullness in your life don’t relax about it, cater to it. “In life too there are junctures when all forces are in balance and work in harmony, so that everything seems to be in the best of order. In such times only the sage recognizes the moments that bode danger and knows how to banish it by means of timely precautions.” There were two changes this week, of which the specific notes are: don’t look back on a peril overcome, keep moving forward.
Our second hexagram, the one that suggests how best to meet the challenges (or the changes) is #42, Increase. “To rule truly is to serve.” (One of the great aphorisms of the I Ching.) “When one discovers good in others, they should imitate it and thus make everything on earth their own. If they perceive something bad in themself, let them rid themselves of it. In this way they become free of evil. This ethical change represents the most important increase of personality.” And please know that this type of commentary, regarding leadership and character formation, applies not only to the external structures of teams and family, but to one’s own internal hierarchies as well.
