This week we pulled the Two of Wands. Here we have a card symbolizing broad understanding. However it is unclear whether this understanding is actually limited by the safety of that position or that a safe position is the only environment to foster such expansive comprehension. It seems that the only way to find out is through the difference of an adventure — here one may risk difficult losses but also may encounter a deeper wisdom that can’t be come upon from a safe perch.
Our first hexagram this week is #33, Retreat. “Conditions are such that the hostile forces favored by the time are advancing.” It seems clear that this period is not one of great power and understanding. Healthy retreat is one of the greatest skills to possess. Perseverance at any cost does not always guarantee an outcome — and certainly you must know a limitation before you can transcend it.
Our second hexagram, the one that suggests how best to meet the challenges (or the changes) is #31, Influence. This hexagram describes the elements and conditions needed to have a positive impact on a situation. It states that humbleness and keeping an open mind is key. Being fixated on oneself without listening will not encourage the necessary “attraction between affinities” which “is a general law of nature.”
