The Devil

16. Enthusiasm
40. Deliverance
This week we drew “The Devil.” This card is a symbol of blind, insensitive creation, making without knowing — ultimate results are not thought about. We like to think of “The Devil” less as the Christian embodiment of immoral sin and more of the polytheistic symbol of the trickster. Trickster myths are more about transcendental changes that are amoral, not necessarily positive or negative (think Magic Man from Adventure Time).
Our first hexagram, which we partner with our tarot to describe (or further detail) the current situation, is #16, “Enthusiasm.” The “enthusiasm” that is pointed to here is of the universal kind — like the rousing feeling that music can give or the warmth of the sun (when it is needed/wanted). Rhythm and warmth are invisible but they motivate and push things along by immaterial generalization; they obliterate the personal and exchange it with nourishing objectivity. This is like the life force; move with it to achieve your goals.
Our second hexagram, the one that suggests how best to meet the challenges (or the changes) is #40 “Deliverance.” This hexagram talks of relieving tensions, that “deliverance from burdensome pressure has a liberating and stimulating effect on life.” It also suggests that when possible one should hurry to return to normal.
Our extraction: The creation of life even when planned, is done in blindness — humans continue to birth children without knowing their child’s fate. So, formation with insane blindness is the most unavoidable and common thing. It is best to go through life with general enthusiasm. Most things are unknowable, even the ultimate destiny of our most intimate cared-for offerings — but it is best not dwell on the dark and specific possibilities. Find what is healthful and warm; make this your sustenance and quotidian rhythm.
