Human reason is improvisation seeking a rhythm.

When saying this it is taken for granted/understood that the various systems that make up the human body (circulatory, nervous, muscular, etc.) are rhythmic in nature — for obvious economical reasons. So this is the sense in which rhythm is employed. As well, we see attempts at economic rhythm in most things/places/processes. A house is an attempted rhythmof shelter. A word is an attempted rhythm of meaning. (What lies outside attempted rhythm? Yes, exactly…)

Similarly, we understand improvisation to be the chief mode of consciousness. That is, a human seeks, at every waking moment, to manage immediate and long term goals, in a world of relative novelty (meaning, new things are always popping up so there is constant recalibration, slightly or overtly). It is important to emphasize that neither goals, nor the subsequent improvisations, are pure, both are inextricably linked to survival.

To refresh: Human reason is improvisation seeking a rhythm.

So, the situation is not a soul set in motion to solve a basic riddle of faith or a test enacted to navigate an indelible maze of morality, or what have you. Human consciousness is a system of a primarily involuntary nature — therefore no person or group can be considered as wholly blessed or in possession of particular morality or intelligence — each is simply involuntarily seeking rhythm/stability/balance. Ultimately the notion pushes (we think) a generally congenial idea: the need for people to artificially work together for survival; that is, working together by choice within a system.

As well, it needs saying, that this view doesn’t at all block what others might call a metaphysical outlook. We are in constant awe of all that is occurring.
