We are inclined to say that primacy of topicality is iniquity, but of course no statement can hold merit under scrutiny, for quite a few reasons, but mainly because statements are always merely words (proxy). And obviously any speculative statement said with confidence innately undermines itself. So we employ this faulty-ish notion about topicality humbly as the start of a kind-of general (we feel needed) observation about “the web.” Without criticism it might be said that there is a certain tendency of the web, manifest because of an overdetermination of skill. The skill: swiftness and the tendency: the promotion of immediacy as primary. Immediacy is definitely real and useful but it is always only half the story (swiftness on the wrong path just gets one farther afield and a field without dimension is not navigable). It is simply incorrect to present presentness as full of a dimensionality that by definition it doesn’t have. Dimensionality requires facets that are visible only due to perspective; this is true of vision as well as ideas.
On our shelf we have a small grouping of books which include the writers Mircea Eliade, George Kubler, Loren Eiseley, Norbert Elias and Erwin Panofsky. All shared the gift for imparting an excitement and curiosity about perspective (in the grand sense) — Eiseley by way of the biological/geological/archeological, Panofsy through the aesthetic and cultural, Kubler/Elias through the sociological, and Eliade by way of the metaphysical and theological. There is no space here to go much further than this suggestive list, but we hope to manifest the above intimation through both personal generation and outward promotion of projects (see today’s staff pick). The point softly raised here is perhaps what is meant when we say put your projects on the web.
