Life without the imagination would be a horror of bureaucratic torpor — maintenance without dérive (French; drift). But beyond mere liberty, in these essays (and three poems) Stevens argues: “the [imagination] is an illumination of a surface, the movement of a self in a rock”. Movement of a self even in a rock! Yes/agreed — lovely/true.
